University Avenue between the Caltrain station and Middlefield Road, with the side streets off it: shop fronts and restaurants at the sidewalk, offices and apartments on the floors above, city garages on the cross streets, the Caltrain lots along Alma Street, and a second wave of calls once the kitchens close.

The wide streets between Embarcadero Road and Oregon Expressway: 1920s and 1930s houses behind tall hedges, others rebuilt in the last twenty years, a side gate onto the drive, a detached garage at the back of the lot, a guest cottage, and households whose keys are carried by a housekeeper and filed by a property manager.

The streets between University Avenue and the creek, with Rinconada Park and Lucie Stern at one edge: houses from the 1910s through the 1940s under old oaks, gates to back gardens, garages at the end of a long drive, and owners who have lived behind the same front door for thirty years.
