The survey walks each door and writes down three things: what the door is made of, what hardware it carries now, and how far the nearest power and network points are. Those three answers choose the hardware. A wooden or hollow-metal door with a deep frame gets an electric strike. A glass-and-aluminum door whose stile is too thin for a strike gets a magnetic lock at the head. A driveway gate gets a connection to the operator it already has. The controller is sized with two spare positions for the doors you add later, and the credential is whatever your staff will actually keep on them, which is a phone more often than a card. The driveway gate on our Old Palo Alto house has a keypad from 2006 and every gardener since knows the code. Can it be brought into this?+

It can, and the gate operator itself stays. The keypad is replaced with one that holds a separate code for each person, on a schedule, so the gardener's code works Tuesdays and the housekeeper's Mondays and Thursdays. The family gets a phone credential and never types. The intercom can ring your phone wherever you are, so a delivery at the gate is answered from the office.

An auditor wants a record of every entry to the sample room in our Research Park lab.+

A networked reader on that door writes one, with name, date and minute, and exports it as a spreadsheet when the auditor asks. If your protocol calls for two people, the software can require two credentials within a few seconds of each other before the strike releases. The restricted mechanical override for that door is held by one named person and appears in the log as well.

Our lobby door on University Avenue is a sheet of glass in a thin aluminum frame. What holds it shut?+

A magnetic lock across the top of the frame; the stile is too thin to take a strike. On the inside, a motion sensor above the door and a button beside it release the maglock on the way out. The deadlatch already in the stile stays, so the door can still be locked with a key at night after the maglock is off.
